Random thought that popped into my head as I run on my tea alone after 37 hours with no sleep (please excuse me if this is filled with typos im tired but also cant sleep)-

So we can't seem to crack how to make Nightmare fall for us, right?

Well, I've got a few ideas

1: So he wants to play hard to get? Just play hard to get rid of! (Either he will find this endearing or you'll end up getting killed (probably the second one tbh) but it's worth a shot)

2: Get close to the people he cares about (even if he doesn't admit caring about them). I don't mean super close, but become good friends with all if them! If you're closer to his loved ones, then hhe may be more comfortable with you.

3: Find out what he likes but doesn't have / can't get for some reason and just... leave them around for him. Put them in little boxes n stuff (just make sure Blade doesn't steal him bc I feel like he would-) and give zero explanation as to why. Like-

NM: "[Y/N] why is the an antique cursed record I've been trying to get my hands on for years suddenly on my desk" You: "Oh yeah that was me" NM: "How did you even get this??" You: "Don't worry about it-"

3.5: pull a blade / A [I think that's what they're called, based off of Cricket's comments] and gift him the organs of his enemies preserved in jars

4: Be like really frickin flirty but pretend you don't even know you're doing it- like Chaos did! (Pls tell me yall remember that too)

*just hanging out in the library or somethinh* You: *drops the most insane, down-bad comment of all time but words it in a way so it sounds normal at first* NM: "....e-excuse me?" You: *with feigned innocence* Did I say something wrong?

5: flirt with him over time, but make it a gradual shift- like at first it's just the frequent little compliments on a lot of the things he does, until you eventually get to actual flirting- [maybe even the down bad stuff eventually 👀]

6: flirt with him, but be like... all formal about it. Idk how to explain it

7: write poetry. GOOD poetry. Then over time, slowly add more romance to your poems to get him build up. Then start mixing in his name every once in a while - not necessarily for the romance poems, just make sure he's referenced or something. Then get more into writing love poems about Nightmare himself.

Kim meets Porchay while Chay is working his minimum wage job in fast food or something, he instantly finds Chay adorable and keeps going back to Chay's work, trying to talk to him/work up the courage to ask him on a date. Kim is so down bad, he even gets a job there. It's disgusting and Kim lasts exactly 1 hour, but in that time he manages to ask Chay on a date.

During that time Kim worked in the kitchen, and he was okay making the food until he realized the deep fryers were messing with his hair and his skin started to feel disgusting so he kept complaining and not wanting to go near the deep fryers, he was then moved to try working the cash registers, but he couldn't handle having to be nice and eventually Chay had to stop him from jumping over the counter to fight a rude customer.

Eventually Kim manages to get a date with Chay, their first date is low-key and easy, they go see a movie or something easy. They easily talk and get closer.

Then Kim decides he wants to take Chay out on a really fancy and nice date so he sets up a reservation for one of his families fancy restaurants, and on the way there in the car Chay is like, 'why are we going to the fancy part of town?'

And Kim's like 'oh I wanted to take you somewhere nice'

and Chay's like "I hope it's not one of those fancy restaurants where everyone is all dressed up I can't stand rich people"

Kim breaks out into a sweat 'What.'

Chay starts going on a whole rant about how he hates all rich people and eat the rich and whatever,

and then Kim has to find a way to tell Chay how they are going to one of those fancy rich restaurant and when they get there, and they are served quickly and Chay can see all the staff giving him a look as he isn't dressed right for the restaurant but Kim tells him to ignore them,

But Chay gets kinda suspicious and is like why are they being so nice to you? omg are you one of those rich people?

Kim has to make up some lie about how he won the reservation in a contest or something, and Chay believes him, for the moment.

And then when they order food the menu is all in English or French or some other language and Chay cant read it so he starts making fun of rich people and Kim's is like yeah haha I also definitely have no idea what this menu says…

Chay has to use the bathroom and the waiter comes while Chay is gone so Kim just orders what he thinks Chay would like, he also orders a really expensive and fancy wine.

When it comes Chay is like is this part of the contest too? Because he knows from Porsche that the wine is expensive, and Kim has to be like uhhhh yeah it's part of the contest don't worry

Anyway they get their food and start eating and Chay is making fun of all the cutlery and is like who even needs this much cutlery omg rich people are so stupid lmao and Kim is like yeah ha ha, but in his mind he is dying cause there is no way he is going to be able to pretend he is poor forever he could barely handle an hour in a minimum wage job,

What if he wanted to invite Chay to his place? Where do poor people live? Does he need to buy a run down apartment complex? and Chay hadn't questioned Kim on his car cause Kim only access to one of his cars at the moment which was thankfully his most normal one but did that mean Kim wouldn't be able to drive any of his fancy cars with Chay?

Anyway Kim uses the wrong cutlery on purpose to match Chay and not expose himself as rich but for some reason Kinn is also in the restaurant that night.

Kinn sees Kim eating with the wrong cutlery, and he just HAS to get up and come over to Kim, and he just starts going on this whole thing about how Kim is acting like a savage for using the wrong cutlery and how Kim is embarrassing himself and then Kinn also noticed Kim is dressed in like jeans and goes on about that too, the whole time Kim is just glaring at Kinn trying to telepathically communicate that if Kinn fucks this up for him he will be sicking Thankhun on Kinn.

Somehow, Kinn never reveals that they are related despite thinking Kims death glare was just his normal face, In Chays mind he thinks a random rich guy came up to them and started lecturing them about proper dining etiquette unprompted.

Once Kinn leaves and Chay is like 'omg this is why I hate rich people, they always think they are better than everyone else, promise me if you win another contest not to take me to another fancy restaurant.'

Anyway, Kim spends months pretending he is poor, for the first few months he just always insist they go to Chay's instead of his. But then he does end up buying a run down apartment complex, and even when he gets to pick the nicest apartment in the building its still horrible. He tries to make it look lived in but he doesn't really know what to put in it that a poor person would have so he leaves it mostly unfurnished.

Anyway because of all this Chay thinks Kim is even poorer than him and so Chay always insists on paying for Kim on dates (when Kim manages to pay before him Chay gets upset cause he thinks Kim is spending too much on him that he should really be keeping for himself!), or he'll buy Kim like little trickets and things or something but then Kim keeps all of Chay's gifts at his actual apartment so Chay thinks Kim keeps getting robbed or something.

Eventually Chay finds out Kim is rich and he does not take it well.

But once they work it out and get back together Chay takes full advantage of Kim's eagerness to buy everything he wants but to Chay that just means like being able to order more then one thing or something other than the cheapest item at a restaurant,

while still pretending to be poor Kim gets Chay like designer clothes or really nice jewelry or something for Chay's birthday and Chay lowkey thinks Kim is either a really good thief or a scam artist or something but also he's into it

I want Tim!Robin and Red Hood caught in camera fighting where Tim’s being such a little shit trying to get Jason back in to the family and get him to bond, that Jason ends up throwing back “Yeah, how’s fracticide for a bonding activity?” Only Tim smiles like the little freak he is. In his mind, he is like wow he skipped steps two to five and acknowledged we’re brothers. progress.

meanwhile, Jason is screaming in frustration and shooting at him, but just missing him cause he is sorry about titans tower but that’s about it. he doesn’t like the brat, he doesn’t want to play happy family with him and he doesn’t appreciate his efforts of purposely getting in dangerous situations in front of Jason so he has to sweep in just because he feels guilty. (Tim is totally trying to get him to associate him to safety)

Jason doesn’t care what anyone says, that little menace is a manipulative little shit and he doesn’t. want. to. see. him.

Anyways the next day Jason wakes up to a bunch of headlines and conspiracies stating his sibling rivalry with Robin publicly which what. Now Jason has many of his enemies trying to get back at him via the little idiot and oh my fucking god Jason has never been so distracted as to having to keep up with bat comm than he is now. He curses everything and everyone and begrudgingly has his goons act like traffic light protection control.

Yes Jason has accidentally been given the chance to redeem himself by dealing with a problem he himself made and he’s giving himself sooo much shit for it. He literally never meant everyone to question in polls who’s now more protective over Robin—Jason’s literally mortified????to have Batman compared to him in that regard??? Jason may not like Robin at all but hell is the bar fucking low. that he refuses to let the dumbass die in the same colors he did is—is not a fucking custody battle?? what why is Vicky Vale painting it like that

Jason swears he has never hated the media more than he does now. He is constantly framed in being in a competition with Batman?? which yeah he gets a fucking kick of winning one over the asshole but he literally said it in that fucking video (the beginning of his downfall) he is the Tim’s older brother why do they have to bring Batman in the conversation?? he fucking hates him. Forget replacing him, he hates him cause now all of Gotham walks around the implication that if Robin’s his brother well then that must fucking mean he’s freaking Batman’s son??? which fucking yeah he is but—but now his goons go behind his back and update the sulking piece of emotion brick on his fucking wellbeing??? I think fans want Jason to be a good person or be becoming one. To have a character that is well meaning and compassionate but decided murder is ok and to stand against main heroes who’s beliefs and actions go against the people he cares about and wants in his life. It’s confusing for people. People want their fav characters to be happy. But Jason can’t have his family’s support and follow his moral code. He’s cares about people and Gotham, and he’s an asshole who kills. It’s messy. It’s not black and white. I don’t even think Jason cares about being a good person or in the right anymore. I think he cares about what will save the most people instead.

Batman’s definition of Good is not synonymous with absolute good/right no matter how much dc insists it is. Torture, battery/assault, surveillance, those are all condemnable actions too. I won’t get into the exhausting and frankly dumb debate of comic book morality wrt killing because I’ve already reblogged plenty of posts from other people who explained my thoughts on the matter far better than I ever have the patience to sit down and articulate. I also just think the notion that there’s something to be done about fictional characters who kill nazis and senseless murderers is stupid. Jason’s point is that the “main” heroes’ sanitized definition of right has its unaddressed holes and flaws which ultimately result in more preventable fatalities, and that he’ll work to correct those missing spots.

He doesn’t not care about doing what’s right. What he doesn’t care about (at least during his Winick characterization) is whether Batman thinks he’s right or wrong, because he sees the flaws in Batman’s methodology (and since he has a mind of his own). Batman’s methods alone cannot address Arkham’s revolving door and the rogues that come and go through those doors who have no intention (or capability from the doylist pov) of ever changing or undergoing redemption. Jason knows that he’s minimizing the number of preventable deaths by killing his targets, typically Characters Who Simply Do Fucked Up Shit Just Because, Why The Fuck Not?

Secondly, Jason is compassionate … to a fault. That was his fatal flaw. If he wasn’t so hell-bent on saving his potential birth mother he just met from that bomb despite everything she did to him prior, he could have protected himself instead, however slim his odds of survival were. What about his relationship with his other parents? He was a caregiver during his early childhood years for Catherine, until her death. Even mature adults who are financially stable find being a caregiver to a dying parent to be extremely burdensome on their bodies and minds, but he never complained about it or resented Catherine for being unable to care for him. Despite how none of his parents have really been what he needed them to be, he doesn’t blame them for their failings, and even continues to think highly of them (Bruce included).

And post-death? Enter Lost Days. Despite being dead set on plotting his revenge on Bruce, he constantly sidelines this in order to save other victims who are helpless like he once was. His own anger, trauma, and mission don’t remain his priority. (Sound familiar? Something something my own trauma above my son’s, mission above all else, etc.). Why would he waste precious time and risk his own life to do this if he wasn’t empathetic towards these victims or didn’t care about doing the right thing. He is simultaneously horribly traumatized and full of rage, and also incapable of ignoring what’s happening to victims around him (even as he claims that it’s indeed not his priority). And in that same vein, the entire premise of his rebirth outlaws run was that he doesn’t care if the public views him as a villain, an outlaw, so long as he can protect Gotham. And anyway where is this portrayal of him not caring about being in the right anymore. Almost every modern Jason story is about him grappling with where he stands with Bruce/Batman. During the early 2000s was probably the last time he did not care (hello, tentatodd??).

Jason has very evidently been portrayed as a kind and compassionate character. He is also simultaneously a calculated killer who doesn’t hesitate to kill when he deems necessary, and does so without remorse. It’s called being a Complex Character With An Edge™ that as you said, people so often claim to love. However when he fulfills that latter part, that seems to upset people because “killing bad”, and they then try to shave off and round out all his edges and claim he shouldn’t be that angry. In that case I guess you should just stick to liking traditional one-dimensional characters instead of claiming to like Jason but then encouraging his character assassination attempt by dc. Lol.

Lastly, who said anything about the batfam making Jason happy? Just because he’s written nowadays to want acceptance from Bruce (a shoddy attempt at forcing a non-existent nuclear batfamily), doesn’t mean that it’s a sound decision or that it does his character justice. I certainly don’t empathize with the idea that Jason needs the family’s approval or acceptance to be happy. (And anyway he has enough outlets for angst and pain aside from the batfam hello explore his other sources of trauma and do more deep dives into how he thinks when he’s alone). I don’t want them to magically make up and become one big happy family. This is not disney Lol. Besides, there are plenty of stories from dc that have that type of “wholesome” (hate that word utilization) characterization for Jason (Li’l Gotham, Tiny Titans, wfa, and even new stuff like the brave and the bold mini) and that is sufficient imo. Jason fans who are invested in the character deserve accurate, nuanced characterization and well-written stories, whether they be from his robin days (e.g., Batman: The Cult) or as red hood.
